Another reason for loving the Beeb...
A fabulous radio documentary on what is for my money - and Hugh's and more than a few other folk - oneof the most beautiful pieces of music ever:
Tallis's Spem in Allium - an unaccompanied choral piece written for 40 (!) individual vocal lines, split into 8 choirs of 5.
The show includes a great story about a performance of this at the memorial for poet laureate, Ted Hughes. Real "Soul Music" as the show calls it.
Surprising how the combined voices of others can affect us and arouse our feelings - surprising how easily our feelings are aroused by the voices of others...
The brilliant thing of course with the Tallis is how the sheer number of interweaving vocal lines just overwhelms our capacity to process them. The sound of the 8 choirs just defy rational resistance: our monkey selves just can't help themselves...
